A Scream movie isn’t really a Scream movie unless the plot keeps you guessing — and that logic also applies to returning franchise star Scott Foley, who, despite confirming that his character was killed in Scream 3, will still appear in the upcoming Scream 7.

The 52-year-old appeared Friday on Good Morning America to promote his new role on the TV series Will Trent, and the talk show’s panel grilled him on his Scream 7 return alongside other former franchise stars who also died in past installments, including David Arquette and Matthew Lillard.

“I’m willing to take a poll here and someone can explain it to me because I don’t know how it works out,” Foley admitted, before going on to reference his character, film director Roman, eventually being unmasked as Ghostface in the 2000 sequel. “Yeah, my character — spoiler alert — 25 years ago, I was the killer in Scream 3. He was brutally taken to town and killed. Now I’m back in Scream 7, and I’m not sure how it’s going to work.”

The GMA cohosts then asked Foley about reuniting with the Scream family, including Neve Campbell, who sat Scream 6 out over a pay dispute, and Courteney Cox.

“The best, it’s so much fun. I got to see Neve again and David Arquette again, and Kevin Williamson, who wrote the first one,” Foley said. “I was in Dawson’s Creek, which was the first TV show he did years ago, he’s directing this one, and we had so much fun being on set. It was great to be around people you love and know.”

Full details for Scream 7 are still tightly under wraps, though other recent cast announcements included the return of other series stars Mason Gooding, Jr., Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Ghostface voice actor Roger L. Jackson. New additions to the cast include Joel McHale, Anna Camp, and Live With Kelly and Mark morning TV personality Mark Consuelos, all in undisclosed roles.

“Matthew Lillard’s been a huge part of my understanding and love for the medium for a very long time,” Gooding previously told Entertainment Weekly of the returning cast. “When you consider his work in the context of [the first] Scream, you realize that was actually him kind of reigning it in and being more grounded given the circumstances. To see where they’re taking that understanding and dynamic in 7 is far different than I imagine anyone will be able to anticipate, and they will absolutely deliver.”

Speaking about Foley, Gooding called the star “incredible” and cited Scream 3 as “a secret pleasure” of his. “I cannot wait for people to see what they’re cooking, so to speak, with Matthew and Scott,” he added, “because it’s something special.”

The Scream 7 cast came together amid the highly publicized exits of Scream 5 and 6 actresses Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. Barrera was fired from the series over comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war, while Ortega exited due to a reported scheduling conflict with Wednesday season 2.

Scream 7 is set for theatrical release on Feb. 27, 2026.
