“Dress for Success” is a main sub-mission you’ll encounter while tracking Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ Golden Teppo boss. Within the quest, you’ll be tasked with collecting silk to make a kosode for the tea ceremony that comes in the final portion of the quest chain. The key issue in “Dress for Success” is the question of which silk you should give the tailor. In this guide, we’ll help you decide whether to give the Chinese Silk or Portuguese Silk in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Dress for Success Walkthrough – Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Complete Searching Sakai:
“Dress for Success” is the second of three sub-missions that lead up to the Golden Teppo, one of the two Shinbakufu members you can hunt after setting out on your mission. The first sub-mission will always be “Searching Sakai,” then you can choose between “Dress for Success” and “The Perfect Gift.”
Locate the Kosode Merchant:

The first step to completing “Dress for Success” is to locate the Kosode Merchant in southwestern Sakai. You don’t need to waste a scout to find the merchant, simply use Observation once you reach the southwestern corner of the city, and you’ll see a blue orb fairly easily.

Once you find the Kosode Merchant – who is a young woman stirring something in a large pot, not a typical merchant – approach her and ask about acquiring a new kosode. She will inform you that pirates made off with the only silk they had, and that there is no other silk available. Naoe will volunteer to get the silk from the pirates, which is the next step in the quest.
Raid the Pirate Ship:
If you turn around from the Kosode Merchant, and walk to the end of the docks, you’ll see two European-style ships anchored off the coast. You’ll need to make your way out to the ship on the left to collect the silk. There are several boats near the dock that you can use to get out there quickly.

If you sneak onto the ship, you can throw kunai at the exploding red pots to take out most of the enemies incredibly quickly. You can also try sneaking, but that is only a good option if it happens to be night. You can also take them on directly, as they are not a particularly strong group of pirates.

Once they are dealt with, loot the chest in the center of the ship. You’ll know the right one by the quest marker. Once you have the Bale of Silk, head back to shore and speak to the Kosode Merchant.
Should You Choose Chinese or Portuguese Silk in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Shinobi Wear Black:
Technically, there are no long-term benefits to picking one silk over the other. However, the choice you make will have a smaller impact on the quest to kill the Golden Teppo. “Dress for Success” technically ends once you select the Kosode you wish the merchant to make. The effects of that choice are not seen until “The Tea Ceremony,” the mission where you confront the Golden Teppo.
If you are playing in Canon mode, you’ll notice that the official choice is for Naoe to pick the Portuguese Black Silk. She comments that “Black suits me better.” If you play in Canon mode, however, you’ll never actually see the benefit of choosing black silk.
If You Choose Red Chinese Silk in AC Shadows:

If you choose the red Chinese silk, the first two women you meet during “The Tea Ceremony” will have the same reactions. Otama will quip that Naoe must not follow Sakai’s fashion regardless of the silk you choose. Lady Satoko will not mention the silk either way. It is only Wakasa that will have a different reaction. If you wear the red silk, Wakasa will tell you that it is worth it to purchase the proper Kosode, implying that the one you’re wearing is not it.
If You Choose Black Portuguese Silk in AC Shadows:

If you choose the black Portuguese silk, Wakasa will compliment your outfit. This seems to be the extent of the differences between choosing red Chinese silk and black Portuguese silk in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
