Of all the gadgets to cop from the Spy Kids set, Alan Cumming went with furniture — namely, a sofa that belonged to his character, Fegan Floop.
For the latest edition of Vanity Fair‘s “Scene Selection,” the Scottish actor and presenter looked back at his time as Mr. Floop, a television star who antagonized spy siblings Carmen (Alexa PenaVega) and Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) across the franchise from director Robert Rodriguez.
“I got a sofa from the set. It’s in my house in the Catskills,” shared Cumming. “A funny purple sofa. Whenever I see clips of Spy Kids I’m always looking for my sofa in the background.”

Cumming made his debut as the faux antagonist in 2001’s Spy Kids and would reprise his role in the next two sequels, Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams and Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. Two more sequels would follow, but Cumming did not return.
The third film featured actress Selena Gomez when she was a “wee girl,” and Cumming recalled running into her and remembering that role. “I went, ‘Oh wait, we’ve been in a film together,'” recalled Cumming. “And she’s so cute; she goes, ‘I wonder if you’d remember.'”
Cumming looked back at his time on the franchise fondly, comparing his cartoonish character to Willy Wonka. “It’s so changed how people approached me,” he said of the franchise. “I remember exactly the moment when young people — young adults — changed their reaction to me when they saw me in public. It went from being like, ‘Oh, famous guy,’ to ‘Mr. Floop! You’re a part of my childhood!’ And it’s continued.”

“I love the idea that I have been a magical part of people’s childhood. It’s such a lovely thing.” Cumming also observed similarities between him and his character. “The truth of Floop is that he really just wants to have a nice time and make lovely art and do his TV show and have fun,” said Cumming. “A bit like me in my life actually. I just want to have fun and do fun things. But he kind of gets — also a bit like me — sometimes his fun and his charm gets used in more mercenary ways.”
The films also starred Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, and Danny Trejo.
