Sterling K. Brown’s Paradise has been renewed for a second season ahead of its March 4 first season finale on Hulu. The renewal comes as no surprise as the political thriller series, which debuted its inaugural episode on January 26, has strong viewership numbers and has received positive reviews from critics and audiences.
Per Variety, Paradise Season 2 will begin production this Spring. Created by This is Us‘ Dan Fogelman and produced by Disney’s 20th Television, the political thriller is set in the serene community of Paradise inhabited by some of the most prominent individuals in the world, who are among the 25,000 residents living in a bunker post an apocalyptic event. The assassination of President Cal Bradford, played by James Marsden, threatens to put the city’s tranquility in jeopardy, with the head of his Secret Service, Brown’s Agent Xavier Collins, tasked with discovering who killed Bradford and the motive of the perpetrator. Alongside Brown and Marsden, the series stars Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Aliyah Mastin, and Percy Daggs IV.

Paradise Star Discussed His Character and Reunion With Series Creator Dan Fogelman
Just after the series premiered, Brown discussed his Paradise character, Xavier Collins, jokingly stating he would love it if series creator Fogelman let him play a less tragic character in any future collaboration. “That would be nice. I probably should have [suggested] that, because he likes to cause your boy a little bit of trauma,” he said. Brown and Fogelman worked together on NBC’s hit series This Is Us, with the actor playing Randall Pearson, a role for which he earned the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

The Paradise star, however, believes Xavier’s tragedy is integral to the Hulu series’ story. ‘The story wouldn’t hit the same way. As you continue, you’ll see why that particular story point has dividends that pay off in later episodes,” Brown said. “And at the end of the day, drama has loss inherent within it. While it’s not always something you want to dive into, it does make for interesting viewing. So, yeah, you could have gotten around it, but it would’ve taken the teeth out of the story.”
