A quick kiss between friends proved to be not the best idea for Saturday Night Live veterans Martin Short and Maya Rudolph as was evidenced by a recent Instagram post made by Short’s longtime friend, Steve Martin. The pair appeared at the recent Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary celebration, per Variety.

Martin took to Instagram and posted a photo of the smooch between Rudolph and Short with the caption: “Maya had Covid. Marty has Covid. I wonder why? The SNL 50th Covid curse is real. Unfortunately, we have to reschedule this weekend’s sold out Durham and Knoxville dates to 10/17 Knoxville and 10/18 Durham. So sorry for the inconvenience. I think we’ll be funnier then, anyway.”

Tour Dates Moved to the Fall

The pair, who currently star in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, had dates upcoming on their “Steve Martin and Martin Short: The Dukes of Funnytown” tour that had to be postponed due to Short’s illness. Stops in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Durham North Carolina had to be rescheduled until October 2025. The SNL50 broadcast was watched by 14.8 million viewers across NBC and its streaming service, Peacock, which is 202% higher than the average audience for a regular SNL episode.

Production Set to Begin Soon on Martin and Short’s Hit Hulu Series

As for the status of Only Murders in the Building, the series’ producers teased what viewers can expect in Season 5 of the comedy-thriller. In January, per The Wrap, executive producer Dan Fogelman said production on Season 5 was expected to start soon, and fans can expect a lot of big-name guest stars.

“I was just texting with Steve (Martin) and Marty (Short) and (showrunner) John Hoffman this morning. We can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later,” Fogelman said. Hoffman commented on the status of Meryl Streep’s Loretta character and said that he has “nothing but huge wishes that we get to do more with her without question. It’s all about getting the right story for her and getting her something worthy,” Hoffman said. One guest star set to return is Tea Leoni as Sofia Cacimelio when the fifth season premieres.

Showrunner Praises the Cast of Only Murders in the Building

Hoffman said the next season will have “another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up.” He also had nothing but kind things to say about Martin, Short, and Selena Gomez and their performances in the series.

“The ability for the writers to take those three guys who are so comfortable in the skin of those roles now, and where the comedy sits in the show, where the dramedy sits in the show, it’s just so fun to start a new story with them and explore new aspects of their friendship and new aspects of their lives,” Hoffman said.

Only Murders in the Building streams on Hulu. The Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary celebration is streaming on Peacock.
