The DC Universe’s Superman movie sees Clark Kent cross paths with various friends and foes as the upcoming blockbuster chronicles his early years as the Man of Steel. Among the foes is the maniacal Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult.
When CBR asked Hoult if he thinks Lex is right about “the threat of Superman,” the actor gave a very logical response which touched on the fact that everyone may not have the same core beliefs. “If someone had ultimate power and the ability to do anything, then what happens when what he does doesn’t align with everyone’s belief of what is right?” he said during the MegaCon Orlando appearance.

Lex Luthor Actor Nicholas Hoult Credits Smallville for First Exposure to Superman
Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s new Superman movie, credits Smallville as his first exposure to Superman’s story.
Described as a “workplace origin story” by Warner Bros., Superman diverts from the typical tale about the beloved hero, chronicling Kent’s early days at the Daily Planet and the reconciliation of his Kryptonian heritage. Luthor will be joined by his love interest, Eve Teschmacher (Sara Sampaio) and his henchman, Otis (Terence Rosemore), as he looks to take down Superman in their on-screen showdown.
Hoult joins a long list of actors to portray the villainous Luthor, including Jesse Eisenberg, who portrayed the LuthorCorp CEO in the DC Extended Universe. Hoult went all out for his portrayal of Luthor, rocking his trademark bald head and bulking up for the key role. Hoult also teased that Luthor would be an “imposing and dangerous” figure in the new movie, suggesting that his character plans to “outmaneuver” the Man of Steel at every turn.
Superman sees Hoult appear alongside an ensemble cast that also includes Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Wendell Pierce (Perry White) and Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen). The upcoming tentpole is the first of a five-film slate in the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

The superhero genre has gained a new defender.
The upcoming Superman remake is the latest project of an increasingly impressive resume for Hoult, who most recently starred in the critically acclaimed Nosferatu remake. Superman is Hoult’s later foray into the superhero film genre, having starred as the X-Men franchise’s Dr. Hank McCoy/Beast and wanting to reprise the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as they plan an X-Men reboot film.
Superman opens in theaters on July 11.
