On a walkthrough of her fall collection, Tanya Taylor explained that she wanted “to pare things back and make it feel a little bit cleaner and really believable.” At the same time, the designer aimed to “inject a little fantasy into the way we wear things.” The end result was not quite quiet luxury, but nothing terribly loud either. A happy medium seems to be the tenor of the season so far and a reasonable response to a time when nothing seems certain.

Change came in small increments. Shots of butter yellow brightened up an autumnal palette, as did a double-face cashmere coat with ribbed cuffs and button details in a lichen green. Suede and leather were hero materials that were unexpectedly styled against prints and embellished pieces. Pre-fall’s Western touches ceded to English country accents in the form of barn-like solid-and-check jackets. Denim and corduroy came together in a flattering skirt that was shown with a hand-beaded pearl and diamanté sweater that was slightly ’80s in its exuberance.

Prints are a Taylor mainstay; a blurred hand-painted plaid was striking and a spliced floral-print dress was effective. As Taylor just launched Delphine, a line of party dresses, the predominance of dress-up frocks here was surprising, and many felt rote. The “spark of personality” Taylor wanted to conjure was rather to be found in “ski bunny” sweaters for city girls, the combination of leather and shirting, and the mixed stitches on a second-skin knit with a handkerchief hem.
