Proposals to establish a new campsite for tents and motorhomes on Summerhill Road in Jurby, Isle of Man, have been approved by local planners. The development will transform a section of agricultural land into a site accommodating 15 pitched tents, 10 motorhomes, and three shepherd-style huts according to an article by BBC News.
The site has a history of use by the Isle of Man Motor Caravan Club since the 1990s for vehicle parking and has otherwise been used for livestock grazing.
Despite concerns about countryside preservation, Planning Committee member Sam Skelton highlighted that the land’s poor agricultural quality aligned with the government’s tourism goals.
The project includes plans for a reception office and essential amenities such as toilet and shower facilities. To mitigate visual impact, the proposal includes tree planting to screen the area, as noted in a planning officer’s report.
The report deemed the limited scale of the project acceptable in terms of visual changes, particularly during peak periods like the TT and Manx Grand Prix, from March to October.
Applicant Andrew Brew expressed that the initiative would diversify his income streams and blend well with the surrounding area. However, the project faced objections from some residents who were concerned about its potential impact on the “peaceful nature” of Jurby East.
Committee member Matthew Warren proposed restrictions on the length of campervan stays, while another member, Adele, suggested limiting loud music after 22:00 GMT to address local concerns.
This development represents a significant opportunity for the Isle of Man’s campground industry. By attracting visitors with a dedicated and well-equipped site, the project aligns with broader efforts to bolster tourism and cater to the growing interest in outdoor recreation.
