Texas A&M University is planning to pause undergraduate enrollment growth for the next five years, The Battalion reported.

The university’s student body has grown by 30 percent over the last decade, which has stressed the institution’s infrastructure, from on-campus housing to transit. The enrollment pause is one prong of a broader plan to “rightsize” the university, according to a campus message from President Mark A. Welsh III.

“This massive growth is due in large part to the outstanding student education and experience that our amazing faculty and staff provide to our exceptional students,” Welsh wrote. “Collectively, we absorbed much of the impact of this growth over the last 10 years, but as I’ve said before, we cannot continue to do that.”

Texas A&M is planning to add 15,000 new undergraduates a year; the cap doesn’t affect graduate or online enrollment. As part of the plan, the college is also looking to add at least  2,500 beds in on-campus housing and invest $3 million over five years in new faculty salaries and benefits.
