If you have a rounder face, you might be wondering which bangs will be the most flattering. The aim is to enhance your natural features rather than crowd your face with all that good hair. Round faces are often associated with a youthful appearance—if you’re hoping to add depth and definition, having some cut in might be the perfect option. Below, we asked the experts which bangs work best for round faces and what to ask your stylist before taking the plunge.

Do bangs work for round faces?

Yes! Bangs suit all face shapes, including round ones. “Fringe can reshape a round face,” says Joel Goncalves, senior stylist at John Frieda Salons. “A cleverly cut set of bangs can give the illusion of a completely different face structure.”

Which type of bangs is best for a round face?

Experts generally agree that the most flattering bangs for round faces are curtain ones, creating a thin and wispy frame around your features, which Andreas Wild, a stylist at Larry King Notting Hill, recommends styling with “a middle part.” When cut well, they can “give the impression of sharper cheekbones,” adds Skye Edwards, artistic director at Gielly Green. “On thick wavy hair, they can be blow-dried away from the face, which can add volume and lengthen your face. If your hair is straighter, curtain bangs cut to around cheekbone length, that sit flatter, can elongate your face.”

Which other bangs work for round faces?

Another way to enhance your cheekbones is with the Brigitte Bardot style of fringe, which helps to frame the face and give it structure. Cut to the bridge of the nose, it curves into the cheekbones and looks great regardless of hair length. It is best worn shaggy, with a messy centre parting. If you’re interested in going shorter, experiment with something that sits just above the eyebrow. “Just make sure it’s choppy and layered, or wispy and slightly messy,” says Edwards. You can add definition with a color effect, too. “Try making the bangs slightly lighter in the center and darker on the sides,” recommends Michele Antiga, colourist and signature stylist at Gielly Green.

Which type of fringe is worst for a round face?

While most bangs work for round faces, it’s best to avoid a straight fringe. “Short, blunt bangs are a big no in most cases,” says Antiga, “as it will make the face seem shorter and wider.”
