Fans of The Last of Us hoping for news about The Last of Us: Part III heading into Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us were dealt a crushing blow. Neil Druckmann, head of Naughty Dog and co-creator of The Last of Us, spoke with Variety on the upcoming second season of the hit adaptation, which will begin telling the story of The Last of Us: Part II.

During the interview, Druckmann was asked about the prospects of The Last of Us: Part III. He sighed and said, “I was waiting for this question,” before continuing, “I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”

I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.

The Last of Us: Part II, which was released to critical acclaim, winning the award for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020, does leave on an open-ended note. It functions as a firm ending to the overall story while still leaving the door open for a possible continuation.

While Druckmann didn’t explicitly say The Last of Us: Part III was never going to happen, his comments suggest fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. The Last of Us: Part II is set for a PC release on Apr. 3.

Season 2 of The Last Of Us Premieres April 13

One Unseen Character Will Also Be Spotlighted

After a two-year-long wait, Season 2 of The Last of Us will kick off on Apr. 13. Season 2 will not tell the full story of The Last of Us: Part II, instead stretching out the game across two to possibly three seasons. Craig Mazin, executive producer for The Last of Us, said, “It feels like we’ve got one or two more seasons.” Mazin continues, “It’s getting harder to make, because every episode gets big. You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is.”

‘[It’s] Pretty Brutal’: The Last of Us Creator Says Season 2 Will Feature a Scene Cut from the Video Game

The Last of Us Season 2 will depict a brutal moment removed from the 2020 video game.

Season 2 of The Last of Us isn’t expected to drastically change the main plot of The Last of Us: Part II. One notable change will come in the form of Eugene, a character who only exists off-screen through stories between Ellie and Dina.

Eugene will be appearing in the show and played by Joe Pantoliano. Druckmann saw Eugune as another opportunity to expand the universe in a similar manner to Bill and Frank in Season 1. Druckmann said, “I’m like, ‘Oh, I don’t know Eugene that well!’ The story we told [in the game] was somewhat superficial. The way this character comes in really gets to the heart of Joel and Ellie and their relationship.”

Naughty Dog’s Next Game Has Already Been Announced
