Essex College is closing its doors before graduation.

The Sex Lives of College Girls has been canceled at Max after three seasons, Entertainment Weekly can confirm. The series concluded its third season in January, after initially debuting in 2021.

But all hope is not yet lost. Deadline reports that production company Warner Bros. Television is exploring the possibility of finding a new home for the series.

Representatives for the series declined to comment.

The Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble-created comedy is all that the title promised and more: it explores the lives of four roommates at a prestigious New England university, as they discover all that college life has to offer. Beyond their sexual exploits — of which there are many — the series sees them grapple with adulthood, messy friendships, and the realities of campus life.

SLoCG originally launched with stars Pauline Chalamet (as Kimberly), Amrit Kaur (Bela), Alyah Chanelle Scott (Whitney), and Reneé Rapp (Leighton). The latter quickly proved to be a breakout star, continuing her success with a celebrated EP and debut album, before going to the big screen as Regina George in 2024’s Mean Girls: The Musical film.

But her success meant the show was forced to grapple with the loss of Leighton when Rapp exited the series after two seasons.

Enter Gracie Lawrence: the actress and singer who fronts the soul-pop band Lawrence with her brother Clyde. The third season of the show grappled with Leighton’s abrupt exit (Rapp appeared in only the first two episodes of the show) before turning to Kacey’s introduction.

Following the season’s conclusion, fans took notice that the finale — unlike prior seasons — didn’t end with any huge revelations or cliffhangers, instead showing the the four roommates happily coming together in their dorm room. Noble later insisted that the happy ending was not meant to signal the series coming to an end.

“No one told us to, like, wrap up the show or anything like that,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think just me as a creator, I’m losing interest in cliffhangers. I think it’s longer than ever between seasons for logistical reasons within the industry, and frankly, I don’t think audiences like cliffhangers the way that they used to.”

He added that instead of setting up a dramatic twist, he chose a “happy ending” that felt “honest” and “satisfying” after a season of personal growth for the characters.

He continued, “These four girls in this season started off in a not-together place. We started off with four different girls, a different combination. There was a shake-up in the middle. It was rocky at first. They learned more about each other. They grew as people. They had major revelations together, and then they had some wins, and they got to, at the end of the day, sit on a couch with a bunch of Cheetos and just be together.”

The series also starred Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Christopher Meyer, Mia Rodgers, Lauren “Lolo” Spencer, and Renika Williams.
