Summer’s almost here, and that means the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty is not far behind.

Prime Video’s TV adaptation of author Jenny Han‘s beloved trilogy of novels returns in July with the third and final season, which is based on We’ll Always Have Summer. “Three books, three seasons,” Han, who serves as showrunner with Sarah Kucserka, tells Entertainment Weekly. “It feels right to me.”

EW has your exclusive first look at the 11-episode swan song that reveals where the main love triangle — Belly (Lola Tung) and brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) Fisher — is after a big time jump. Just like in Han’s novel, the show picks up with Belly at the end of her freshman year in college, and yes, she’s still with Jeremiah after choosing him over Conrad in the season 2 finale.

“The Jellyfish fans love how sweet and how they are, at their core, best friends,” Tung says. “That relationship is something that’s so special and so unique to them, so it’s exciting to see this season and how their relationship blossoms.”

Get ready for lots of happy, couple-y moments with Belly and Jeremiah, even after almost two years of being in a relationship — especially now that they’re both at the same college. “It’s very sweet and there’s so many amazing scenes for Belly and Jeremiah this season, so many,” Han promises. “Lola and Gavin have really great chemistry and got into such a good rhythm with each other, because we do have a little bit of a time jump going into season 3, so they needed to have that kind of bond, and it was really seamless. It’ll be joyful for people to witness it.”

So what does this mean for Conrad? After getting rejected by Belly, he accepted that she chose his younger brother, and Han and Tung reveal that he’s actually been out of the picture for a while. But don’t worry, “Bonrad” fans: Han promises there will be a lot of scenes with Belly and Conrad coming this season, too.

“Conrad’s been away from everyone for a while, and now he’s back in the mix with people,” the author says. “It’s almost like rediscovering and also seeing the ways that they’ve both changed and have had some distance from each other, and who are these people now? Because there is a little bit of a time jump and he’s been gone. People will see the ways that he’s changed and he’s seeing the ways that Belly and Jeremiah — and Steven [Sean Kaufman] — have changed as well.”

EW’s exclusive first look photos reveal he’s rededicated himself to his education and career goals. “We know that he went to Stanford, and so he’s continuing on his journey to become a doctor, as you can see from that white coat,” Han says. “I think people won’t be surprised to see that.”

But we also see a photo of him having a fun day at the beach with two happy couples — Belly and Jeremiah, and Steven and Taylor (Rain Spencer) — so what exactly is going on there? “I wasn’t thinking of him as a fifth wheel, per se,” Han says. “That is actually a flashback moment in that photo, so do with that what you will.”

While fans of Han’s books may think they know everything about how the story ends, including which Fisher brother Belly ends up with, the author warns that changes are coming. “There are going to be surprises,” she says. “There are the things that they know and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them.”

Tung believes that those changes only help to make the TV show more satisfying for fans, regardless of which side of the love triangle you root for.

“The one thing I’ve always admired about Jenny is that every season and every decision about what’s coming next is purely to serve the story,” Tung explains. “She’s never going to do anything that doesn’t make sense for the story. It’s all about this beautiful world she’s created and giving the fans something really, really special and giving us something really special to work with.”

And while Tung and Han can’t spoil much, the actor has one big reveal she’s ready to show the world: “Belly has a cartilage piercing!”
