The Voice‘s newest coach, Kelsea Ballerini, was having regrets Monday, after contestant Trevon Dawson, a 17-year-old from Cole Camp, Mo., added his country magic to Avril Lavigne’s “I’m With You.”
Ballerini was offering one of her fellow coaches, Adam Levine, her advice on whether to choose Dawson or his singing partner and opponent, Tyler Kae, a 22-year-old from Olympia, Wash., to move on to the Knockouts, the next phase of the competition that begins next week.
Ballerini said that she had thought the song would be more tailored to Kae, whose Blind Audition was Cyndi Lauper‘s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”
“But Trevon, the way that you showed up, it could have been a song that was a country song at some point.” Ballerini said. Then she asked, “Why didn’t I turn?!”
Levine reminded her that everyone had been filling up their teams of 12. There weren’t many spots left.
“Cause if I didn’t turn and could have,” Ballerini said, “then I need to be absolutely fired.”
She complimented Kae, too, saying that her voice was reminiscent of American Idol alum Lauren Alaina’s, “so bold and so beautiful.”
Sitting in his own red chair, coach Michael Bublé joked that the Maroon 5 frontman is the “new king of country.”
Coach John Legend joked that it was the chair Levine was sitting in, a reference to former coach Blake Shelton, who has a rivalry going on with Levine that started on the NBC reality competition.
Ballerini then shot to Levine, “Blake’s rubbing off on ya.”
Levine’s response was, “This chair does smell of him.” He added, “I can feel Blake’s ridicule all the way from Oklahoma.” He broke into an impression of the country star, “What are you thinking? How dare you? This kid’s gonna get beat up at school, singing Avril Lavigne.”

Levine said he was “super proud” of Dawson adapting to the pop song, and he rewarded him with the win. He also joked, “It’s nice to know that Blake doesn’t have to be on the show for me to talk trash about him.”
Legend added, “I love the fire in your eyes when you talk about him.”
The next round of The Voice, the Knockouts, premieres Monday, March 31, at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. Central on NBC.
