- Fans were amazed to discover that the highway in the iconic scene was actually CGI, not a real location.
AMC’s The Walking Dead finished its last episode in November 2022, marking a sad end to the beloved series that saw many glued to their seats throughout its 11 seasons. However, its universe is far from over with plenty of spinoffs to keep fans excited with the likes of Dead City season 2 and Daryl Dixon season 3 on the horizon, but viewers of the original show just can’t seem to get enough of the zombie-filled world that started it all.
For over 177 episodes, Rick and the gang entertained the nation with their unbelievable survival skills and die-hard determination in The Walking Dead. Fans of the series watched as the emotional and tense narrative played out, which saw quite a few of its main characters die in the most brutal way, even going as far as making some loyal viewers switch off completely, especially when it came to that horrific Negan and Glenn scene. Regardless, after almost 3 years, The Walking Dead is still a talking point, with many fans reminiscing about their favorite shots from the show. While some may pick Negan banging on the gate of Alexandria as its best scene, others might choose The Governor watching Woodbury in flames or Carol blowing up Terminus in The Walking Dead‘s Season 5 premiere ‘No Sanctuary’, but its most popular shot has truly stood the test of time.

The highway shot in The Walking Dead is its most iconic as viewers see Rick riding a horse on his way to reach the city of Atlanta in Georgia in the pilot episode, “Days Gone Bye”. Although Rick’s horse sadly doesn’t make it very far when they do reach the city, the journey there has been touted as the series’ most beloved because of how it was shot, giving viewers the first grand scale of the devastation the world has succumbed to. In a post on Reddit, a fan of The Walking Dead has showcased how that specific scene was filmed, and it has amazed those who thought it was real all this time.
A side-by-side image of the highway, which was Interstate 85 in Georgia in the show, was actually CGI all along. The creators of the series seemingly used plate shots of the interstate and then inserted them into the shot to make it look like Rick was riding into Atlanta, which makes perfect sense since shutting down an entire busy highway wouldn’t be the most practical thing to do. Some fans, who have only learned of this recently, expressed amazement in the comments section that it wasn’t the real highway after all.
“For 10 years I have thought that they actually closed the highway for this”, said one amazed fan, while another exclaimed, “I always assumed they’d briefly closed an actual highway to shoot this.” Another Walking Dead supporter said, “One of the most iconic shots in the history of television and it’s not even close”, and going by the rest of the comments, they aren’t wrong as the show’s loyal fanbase had nothing but love for this particular shot. In another scene, which fans call yet another “iconic” shot from The Walking Dead‘s pilot episode, the little girl in the pink pajamas that Rick had to shoot has certainly changed in the last 15 years since her appearance on the show.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 and Daryl Dixon Season 3 are set to air in the spring of 2025.
