Two of the biggest heroes in Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time are Lan Mandragoran and Siuan Sanche. Lan is known as an incredible swordsman and instrumental in Moiraine Damodred’s success. Meanwhile, Siuan is the Amyrlin Seat, the leader of the Aes Sedai, and has been an advisor to Egwene al’Vere. Without these two characters, the world would be very different.
Leading up to the March 13 release of The Wheel of Time Season 3, CBR was able to speak with actors Daniel Henney (who plays Lan) and Sophie Okonedo (who portrays Siuan). The two stars discussed Lan and Siuan’s respective journeys in the third season. They also reflected on how their characters’ roles change as the show’s overall story moves forward.
CBR: Daniel, Lan is a character constantly torn between love and duty. In The Wheel of Time Season 3, what are his relationships with Moriaine and Nynaeve, and how does their dynamic evolve across the season?
Daniel Henney: With Moraine, he’s found himself on a more level playing field at this point. After Season 2 — being split apart from her and her going through so much, and then ultimately helping to build this plan to help her in the end and restoring the bond on the beach in Falme — they’ve been through a lot. It’s nice for them just to be back on a level playing field, starting again, mission focused. It’s where he’s the most comfortable with her.
With [Nynaeve], it’s always tough because they’re leaving each other. They’re trying to fall into this love that they know they have. And in the world of The Wheel of Time, our characters, they choose mission and the bigger picture over sort of what’s best for themselves in the moment. So it’s tough.
As far as the dynamic between the three, you’d have to ask Moraine what she thinks about Lan and Nynaeve being together. I’m not quite sure, the jury’s still out, but she does approve it — as you’ve seen in the scenes where she says, aren’t there goodbyes you have to make and things, meaning shouldn’t she say goodbye to Nynaeve? She knows there’s things that are good for him in that relationship. And I think if you love anyone, you want them to be happy.
Sophie, Siuan is one of the most powerful characters in The Wheel of Time. A lot of that power derives from her role as the Amyrlin Seat. In Season 3, were there any difficulties defining her character beyond that role?

10 Best Wheel of Time Episodes (So Far)
After an epic second season of The Wheel of Time, fans are excited for what season 3 will offer. What were the best episodes of season 1 and 2?
Sophie Okonedo: There weren’t difficulties, because you get to see her define [herself] beyond that role. For me, this is my favorite season because I got to do a lot more stuff and [viewers] see me outside of my role as Amyrlin Seat. You got to see me be human, show my vulnerabilities more and not just with Moraine — with other characters as well. As an actor, that’s just definitely a bit more juicy to play.
The Wheel of Time Season 2 ended with that devastating fallout between Moiraine and Siuan. How does your character kind of move forward from that really emotional moment?

Okonedo: To be honest with you, so much happens right from the beginning of Season 3. There isn’t really time to dwell too much on that. You’re just straight in with so many other things happening. But her relationship, that is the heartbeat that’s between them all the time. So that’s never not in the background of everything she does. I think that huge love is always there.
Daniel, Lan is such an incredible fighter and he spends a lot of time with the Aiel during Season 3. How do you see him fitting in with that warrior culture?

These hardened warriors from the Aiel Waste help Perrin in season 2 of Wheel of Time. What else is there to know about the Aiel?
Henney: He does respect the culture very much. They generally don’t approve of blades much and he’s a swordsman, so that’s a point of conflict, but [there’s] definitely mutual respect. You’re going to see some interesting action sequences within that world, which I think the fans will like very much. Ultimately, [there’s] just respect and they’re all in this journey together, moving towards this mission.
The Wheel of Time Season 3 premieres March 13, 2025 on Prime Video.
