The God of War franchise is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. As one of Sony’s most important IPs that continues to receive new titles to this day, God of War has become a pillar of the action genre and has influenced countless titles within the industry. For a publisher who has at times struggled to maintain its IPs beyond a single console generation, it’s impressive that Santa Monica Studios’ action title has evolved through console generations and has arguably become PlayStation’s most important franchise.
As the God of War franchise celebrates its 20th anniversary, fans are waiting with bated breath to see what Sony will do to honor its flagship franchise this year. Rumors have suggested that the publisher is preparing some kind of God of War re-release collection for the PlayStation 5 centered around the titles in the franchise’s Greek mythology saga. Recently, a comment from one of the most important names in the franchise’s development has fanned the flames of this speculation, as it suggest something big is planned.

God of War Collection Rumors May Hold Some Weight
Cory Barlog May Have Teased God of War Remasters A Year Ago
Previously, it was anticipated that this God of War remaster collection would appear at PlayStation’s recent State of Play showcase. Sadly, this showcase came and went with no news on the God of War front, and first-party Sony news was largely limited throughout the show. Fans didn’t lose hope, however, and a recently unearthed tweet makes it seem even more likely that a proper announcement is upon us.
In March 2024, Twitter user @KaptainKuba tweeted in excitement about God of War’s impending celebration and asked, “Can you imagine what they’ll do for the 20th anniversary?” This prompted a response from Cory Barlog, the director of the two most recent God of War titles, who cheekily responded, “I can.” While nothing has been announced in the year since, this tweet has been gaining some traction in the wake of God of War’s incoming birthday.
The God of War Collection May Be Announced Closer To The 20th Anniversary
As it is, Cory’s tweet should be taken with a massive grain of salt. While he is involved deeply in the franchise, he is known to toy with fans on Twitter, as previously evidenced by his tendency to say “never heard of it” when pressed on God of War: Ragnarok before its release. Still, Cory’s tweet could be taken as a tacit admission that Sony will be planning big things for God of War’s 20th birthday, which might just include this vaunted remaster.
If this proposed God of War remaster is real, it will likely be announced in late March. It’s worth pointing out that the original tweet from @KaptainKuba and Cory’s reply were both posted on March 22, 2024, the anniversary of the release of the original God of War. Sony may have balked at announcing this collection during the State of Play to coincide with the franchise’s proper 20th anniversary.

It’s Unclear How Many Games Will Be In The God of War Collection
Given that this remaster collection is still just a rumor, it’s not clear what games will specifically be included in it. Sure, it’s a foregone conclusion that the three numerical entries will be there – God of War III has already been remastered on the PlayStation 4 to begin with – but it’s not clear if the handheld spin-offs or 2013’s God of War: Ascension will be featured alongside it. It has also not been confirmed whether this collection will be available exclusively on the PlayStation 5, or if it will be released on PC as the two Norse-era titles have been.
Still, a God of War remaster collection would be an exciting proposition, as it would allow the entire series to be available on one console. While this announcement may have missed the State of Play, the impending 20th anniversary of the franchise could be a great time to announce the collection properly. Here’s hoping Sony takes advantage of this opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of its flagship series.
