Daredevil: Born Again is finally here, giving fans the revival series they’ve been waiting for. The new Disney+ series takes place years after the events of Daredevil Season 3, bringing its cast and characters into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) now the newly elected Mayor of New York City, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and his friends will stop at nothing to ensure that he doesn’t turn their home into yet another criminal organization. The long-awaited rematch between Daredevil and the Kingpin has finally begun.
While the Kingpin’s return in Born Again is getting most of the attention, there is another villain set to return who may pose an even bigger threat to Daredevil–and the entire world. The original Netflix series dedicated much of its third season to building up a new antagonist who is far more brutal and far less empathetic than Wilson Fisk. Kingpin may always be Daredevil’s archenemy, but he is far less dangerous than the villain he created–and one episode of the original series proves it beyond any doubt.

Bullseye Is Even More Dangerous Than Kingpin
Daredevil Season 3 Introduces Kingpin’s Successor as Daredevil’s New Archenemy

Daredevil Season 3 builds up a villain far more brutal and dangerous than even the Kingpin. While Matt Murdock struggles to regain his senses after the devastating events of The Defenders, audiences are introduced to Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter (Wilson Bethel), an FBI agent assigned to protect Wilson Fisk after he flips as an informant. Kingpin discovers Dex’s difficult upbringing and borderline personality disorder, slowly manipulating the agent’s weaknesses until he has fully corrupted him. Finally, Dex embraces his villainous side, helping Fisk frame Daredevil for a series of bloody murders. Dex, who has the uncanny ability to turn anything into a deadly projectile with stunning accuracy, is a valuable asset for Fisk as he works to regain the power he lost when he was incarcerated. Although Dex works for Fisk during the events of Daredevil Season 3, one episode proves that he is even more dangerous than his villainous employer.

In “Reunion,” a victorious Wilson Fisk prepares for the long-awaited return of his lover, Vanessa Marianna (Ayelet Zurer), who has been abroad avoiding arrest for the last two years. After setting his penthouse in order, there is only one thing he has left to attain: the priceless “Rabbit in a Snowstorm” painting that Vanessa had sold him on the day they first met. Fisk travels to the home of the woman who inherited the piece after his arrest and makes an impassioned plea for her to return it to him. The woman then surprises the mob boss with a story of the painting’s connection to her family and how the Gestapo murdered her father and stole it from them before her young eyes. Unafraid of Fisk, the woman flatly refuses to part with the family heirloom. Fisk, for all his villainy and brutality, is moved by the woman’s story and lets the painting go, deciding that it is better off with her than it ever was with him. This is a surprising moment of compassion and humility on Fisk’s part, showing that, while he is a full-fledged villain, he hasn’t abandoned every trace of his humanity. Dex, on the other hand, shares no such qualms. In the next episode, he surprisingly appears with “Rabbit in a Snowstorm,” gifting it to Fisk to get back in his good graces. Vanessa then discovers droplets of blood on the frame, suggesting that Dex murdered the woman to get the painting back. Dex, as it is revealed, is a true monster who demonstrates no remorse in killing innocent people to get what he wants–crossing lines that even Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, refuses to cross.

Daredevil: Born Again Needs to Unleash Bullseye’s Full Brutality
Bullseye Can Finally Fulfill His Season 3 Tease

Daredevil and Dex will get a rematch in Born Again, as the corrupt FBI agent finally settles into his full-fledged villain persona as Bullseye. The series needs to recapture Dex’s brutality from the original series, depicting him as every bit as evil as he was in Season 3. While fans have had some reservations about Disney producing Daredevil, Born Again promises to be every bit as violent as the Netflix series, offering some hope that it will do justice to Bullseye’s character. With Kingpin now taking a political role in the series, Bullseye may step in as a more physical opponent for Matt Murdock, slowly rising the ranks of his rogues gallery until he proves himself the biggest threat facing New York City.

Bullseye is one of Daredevil’s most brutal villains in the comics, killing without question and even murdering Matt Murdock’s lover, Elektra Natchios. In darker storylines, Bullseye is depicted as a sadist, reveling in whatever pain he can cause his victims and demonstrating little if any chance of redemption. Born Again may choose to dial back Bullseye’s more over-the-top qualities, especially given that the series will be more grounded than most other comic book projects. Even so, the gritty realism of Daredevil is the perfect playground to bring Bullseye to life, showing him as the new deadliest enemy of the Man Without Fear.

Bullseye Can Be Daredevil’s New Nemesis
Kingpin Is Moving on to Bigger and Better Things in the MCU
Daredevil and Bullseye have fought many times in the comics, making the villain second only to Wilson Fisk himself in Matt Murdock’s rogues gallery. Although it is unclear how big a role Bullseye is meant to play in Born Again as the series progresses, the MCU would be missing a major opportunity by rushing through his story. With Kingpin now the Mayor of New York City, the door is open for someone else to step in as Daredevil’s archenemy. Mayor Fisk may be more of an overarching villain moving forward, acting as a political adversary for all of the MCU’s street-level heroes as he declares war on New York’s vigilantes. With Fisk now untouchable, Bullseye would make the perfect new nemesis for Daredevil moving forward.

Fans also want to see more of Bullseye in the MCU beyond Born Again. As one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic villains, Bullseye has a chance of appearing in more projects moving forward in the franchise. Marvel Studios recently announced a Special Presentation centered around Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, perhaps indicating the franchise’s plans to focus on more street-level stories. Bullseye would make an excellent antagonist in a Special Presentation, perhaps even clashing with Frank Castle shortly. Similarly, Bullseye is a complicated and compelling enough character to lead his own Special Presentation, which would no doubt be one of the darkest and grittiest projects Marvel has ever produced.
Daredevil: Born Again marks the beginning of a new era for one of the worst villains from Marvel Comics. Bullseye’s return can set him up as Daredevil’s most brutal enemy, who shares none of the weaknesses of Wilson Fisk. As such, Matt Murdock’s latest adversary may prove to be his toughest yet.
