Superman director James Gunn hopes his reboot, featuring the popular caped crusader, propels the DC Universe to new heights during its infancy. The DC Studios co-CEO teases how the upcoming Warner Bros. tentpole will set the right tone for the DCU, insisting it’s a “different” and “exciting” project that offers fresh experiences for fans.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said that Superman is “100% a James Gunn movie,” though he stressed that he doesn’t want other films in the DCU to mirror his work. He also cites DC Comics’ storytelling approach as inspiration for his Superman reinterpretation. “I think it’s only setting the tone so far as that this is 100 percent a James Gunn movie,” he said. “And what I want with the future films is for them to be the same – not James Gunn movies – but when I talked to Craig Gillespie who’s doing Supergirl, I said, ‘I don’t want all of these movies to be the same.’“

James Gunn’s Superman Trailer Remedies Multiple Major DCEU Flaws
If the recent Superman teaser trailer is any indication, then James Gunn’s DCU could mark a major turnaround for the franchise.
“What I love about DC Comics is that you can read a story like The Dark Knight, which is tonally very different because of its artist and writer than Superman for All Seasons, than All-Star Superman, than [Batman:] The Long Halloween. They’re all these beautiful stories within the same world, but completely different. And that’s what I think is exciting.“
Gunn also admitted that he learned lessons from his time directing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy on how to flesh out characters to make them relatable. “I think that I learned from my time at Marvel… When Guardians of the Galaxy came out, people were like, ‘Well, how is this raccoon going to interact with this God of Thunder who’s been set up in a totally different type of movie?'”
“And that was the thing that people liked the most about [Avengers:] Infinity War,” Gun continued. “So it’s about really letting the artists create these unique visions that allow us to get to know these characters in different ways,” the filmmaker added.
Superman Features An Ensemble Cast
The DCU’s Superman sees David Corenswet become the new Clark Kent, with the film chronicling his journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his adoptive family in Smallville, including his time at the Daily Planet and budding relationship with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan).
The upcoming reboot features an ensemble cast bringing some of Superman’s biggest allies and antagonists to life, including Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific) and María Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica/The Engineer).

The DCU May Be Repeating the MCU’s Biggest Mistake (But There’s Still Hope)
James Gunn’s DCU has a packed slate ahead of it–but is DC Studios getting overzealous? The franchise may be repeating the MCU’s mistakes.
The film also features an appearance from Milly Alcock’s Supergirl ahead of the second DCU film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Test screenings of Superman have reportedly generated encouraging yet mixed results before its planned summer premiere. Gunn has also teased potential reshoots for the film, despite the movie being deep into post-production.
Reports claim there’s more riding on Superman than the DCU’s future as there could be major leadership changes at Warner Bros. depending on the superhero blockbuster’s performance. Superman is the first of five films under the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Superman opens in theaters on July 11.
