Washington Directed Fences

Washington took to the director’s chair for 2016’s Fences, which also starred Viola Davis, who won an Oscar for her performance as Rose Maxton. Fences is an adaptation of August Wilson’s 1995 play of the same name and follows Washington’s character, Troy Maxton, a working-class African American father who is trying to survive and support his family in the 1950s.

Set in Pittsburgh, Washington’s Maxton is employed as a sanitation worker and has to deal with his unfulfilled dream of becoming a professional baseball player. Maxton is bitter about having missed the opportunity, and it creates tension with his son Cory, played by Jovan Adepo as Maxton denies him the chance to meet with a college football recruiter and pursue dreams of his own.

Fences currently has a Certified Fresh 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 75% audience score. The film earned $64.4 million worldwide against a budget of $24 million. Washington was nominated in the Best Actor category at the 2017 Oscars for his work in Fences and the film was nominated for Best Picture that year.

Washington Snubbed at the Oscars this Year

In 2024, Washington starred in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator sequel, Gladiator II, and while the film is nominated for a 2025 Oscar for Best Achievement in Costume Design, the actors and director were snubbed, even though the first Gladiator film, released in 2000, was an Oscar favorite. The original Gladiator took home five Academy Awards in 2001, including Best Picture.

However, in an interview with the New York Times, Washington brushed off the fact that Gladiator II didn’t receive as many nominations as the first film. “I was sitting there smiling, going, ‘Look at you. On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re working on Othello on Broadway,’” Washington said.

“I’m happy for all that did (get nominated), and I’m happy with what I’m doing,” he continued. “Listen, I’ve been around too long. I’ve got — I don’t wanna say other fish to fry, but there’s a reality at this age. The beginning of wisdom is understanding. I’m getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more, and that’s exciting,” Washington concluded.

Man on Fire and Fences are streaming on Tubi. Gladiator II is streaming on Paramount+.
