Tom Welling spent 10 seasons of Smallville in the role of Clark Kent, present for all of the series’ biggest moments. That’s for better or for worse, as there’s at least one episode from the show’s history that Welling doesn’t remember fondly.

Per Screen Rant, Welling joined other Smallville cast members at Fan Expo New Orleans, with Kelsey Krogman on YouTube sharing a video of the occasion. The actors commented on the show’s storylines, and Welling admitted there was one period of time he genuinely “hated.” This would specifically be the “Red Blue Blur” saga, referring to the phase Clark had where he dressed in all black and became a vigilante at night — which was, perhaps, a bit too similar to Batman’s gimmick.

Lex Luthor is often portrayed as an unrepentant villain in Superman adaptations, but Smallville turned Clark Kent’s greatest foe into a tragic figure.

“I’ll tell you my least favorite was the Red Blue Blur stuff,” Welling said.

Lois Lane actor Erica Durance responded, “I was going to say it’s my favorite because you hated it so much!”

I hated it! You saw me being just disgruntled,” Welling said back. “I knew it needed to happen because we were… we were dying!”

Inspired by Superboy comics, Smallville brought Lex Luthor to Clark Kent’s hometown, and future Superman adaptations should make them friends first.

Durance also noted that it “was really hard to say Red Blue Blur.” For her part, Kara Kent (aka Supergirl) actor Laura Vandervoort admitted she couldn’t remember the storyline, asking Welling for clarification. Welling explained how it was a storyline for Clark very reminiscent of Batman, which the actor was not a fan of in the slightest.

“It was this stupid thing where Clark had this Alter Ego where he dressed in black, and he was like Batman,” he said. “And then, as much as I hated it, and Clark really didn’t like it – I had to do scenes with Lois who keeps saying how great the Red Blue Blur is. It was just like, ‘What are we doing?’ It was just Clark being a vigilante at night.”

Tom Welling Still Wants to Reprise His Clark Kent Role

Disappointment in the Red Blue Blur storyline notwithstanding, Welling still hopes to play Clark Kent in another Smallville series. In recent years, Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum have been working on a planned animated series set after the events of the Smallville TV show. The two actors would be joined by other original Smallville stars to voice the same characters. As of now, the desired series has not been officially greenlit, but fans are still holding out hope that it will happen in the near future.

“We’ve been talking about it for a few years,” Welling said at Connecticut’s Terrificon convention last year, per via KryptonSite. “We want to do a Smallville comic book and animated series, and then we would all voice the characters. We’ve already got an artist, and we have a poster. We haven’t been able to share it yet, but Lionel Luthor is looming over everybody, and it’s really cool. But we just can’t do anything without DC saying we can do it. They just haven’t given us a green light, but we’re ready, and Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar], who wrote Smallville, want to write it. But it’s not our property, until they say we can do it.”

Smallvile is streaming on Hulu.
