The U.S. Department of Agriculture is launching a Title IX compliance review of the University of Maine System based on “indications” that the state is allegedly “disregarding” President Donald Trump’s executive order barring transgender women from playing on women’s sports teams, The Portland Press Herald reported.

USDA acting general counsel Ralph Linden wrote in a letter to the university system, as well as to Maine governor Janet Mills and the Office of the Maine Attorney General, that “USDA is committed to upholding the President’s executive order, meaning any institution that chooses to disregard it can count on losing future funding.” According to the Press Herald, the system received $29.78 million from USDA in fiscal year 2024.

“The University of Maine System appreciates the media making us aware of the USDA’s letter, which recognizes our flagship’s record of success in securing funding from that agency but notably makes no allegations of any wrongdoing,” a system spokesperson wrote to Inside Higher Ed. “Maine’s public universities will continue to comply with all relevant State and Federal laws and cooperate with any compliance reviews to ensure postsecondary educational opportunities and high-impact research continue to benefit our students, the state and this nation.”

The department is also investigating the Maine Department of Education and School Administrative District 51, which a Republican state lawmaker attacked on Facebook last week for allegedly allowing a high school–aged trans girl to participate in a girls’ track and field meet. The U.S. Department of Education has also announced investigations into high school sports governing bodies in California and Minnesota related to Trump’s trans athlete ban.
