The best ski resorts in the world are often surveyed, scrutinized, and ranked according to their size, terrain, amenities, and the amount of snowfall they receive. But one enjoyable (and often overlooked) aspect of skiing is the après-ski experience, or what you do when the ski day is done.

The tradition of socializing, feasting, and drinking after a ski session traces its roots back to Norway, but it’s been adapted (and arguably perfected) by American ski resorts. According to a recent report by the British real estate company Savills, one legendary U.S. ski resort region surpassed its European counterparts when it comes to après-ski: Vail, Colorado.

For its report, the company considered factors such as ski pass prices, the average price of drinks such as hot chocolate or Aperol spritzes, plus the number of local spas, restaurants, nightclubs, and bars. It also accounted for things like the average price of an apartment rental and the number of four and five-star hotels in the area. Vail, with its high number of restaurants and bars, beat out all other resorts in the report — including the European properties.

“European resorts, deservedly, have a reputation for some of the best après-ski cultures in the world,” Savills said in a press release obtained by Travel + Leisure. “Apart from the three North American resorts, the top 25 is entirely dominated by European locations.”

As for other North American resorts that made the list, Aspen, Colorado, ranked in third place while Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, Canada, came in sixth. All the other resorts with the best après-ski scenes are in Europe and include destinations such as Switzerland’s Zermatt Ski Resort, Val Gardena in Italy’s Dolomites, and St. Moritz in the Swiss Alps.
