Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the San Antonio Spurs said on Thursday.
Wembanyama was diagnosed when the team returned to San Antonio after Sunday night’s All-Star game in San Fransisco.
Wemby will miss the rest of the 2024-2025 regular season.
The 7-foot-3 French basketball player, who just turned 21 last month, was rookie of the year last season.
According to the National Library of Medicine, DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually rare for young adults under 30 years old. However, having a family history of DVT can increase the risks, as well as not moving for long periods of time or being immobile after surgery or serious injury.
The diagnosis itself isn’t life-threatening, blood clots can break and travel through the bloodstream. The danger presents in pulmonary embolisms, but with quick diagnosis and treatment those dangers can be avoided.
Symptoms can include swelling of the arm, pain or tenderness, chest pain, shortness of breath and lightheadedness.
As the news broke on Thursday, hundreds flooded the comment section of the announcement on the Spurs’ social media accounts, thanking his team for catching the diagnosis and wishing Wemby a speedy recovery.
