Ohana means family and— well, you know the rest.

But in case you’ve forgotten, Disney is reminding the masses by retelling the story of Lilo & Stitch via a live-action remake of the beloved 2002 film.

The first trailer for the upcoming film reintroduces Stitch, a chaotic blue alien experiment who quickly becomes the galaxy’s most-wanted extraterrestrial when he steals a spaceship and crash lands on Earth. The kicker? His arrival just so happens to coincide with a desperate wish from a little Hawaiian girl, Lilo (Maia Kealoha).

“I wish for a friend,” Lilo says in the trailer, staring up at a shooting star. “Like, a best friend.”

And when Lilo’s attempt to adopt a dog leads her to befriend Stitch, that wish comes true. Just not in the way she expected.

And so the chaos begins, with the 6-year-old boldly taking on the responsibility of reforming the dangerous “blue dog.” While Lilo does her best to tame Stitch — unlocking his heart along the way — the pair become the target of powerful forces on Earth, and beyond, who fear that he could still be a force for evil.

The highly anticipated film continues Disney’s trend of reimagining some of the company’s most popular animated movies as live-action films. Previous entire include Cinderella, Beauty and the Best, Aladdin, Dumbo, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King, while future projects include Snow White, Moana, and Tangled.

This new Lilo & Stitch is helmed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On). Stitch will once again be voiced by Chris Sanders (The Wild Robot), who was also the co-director of the original film. Meanwhile Kealoha is stepping into the role of Lilo, and Sydney Elizabeth Agudong plays her older sister and guardian Nani.

Sanders’ fellow original cast members Tia Carrere (who originally played Nani) and Amy Hill (the original Mrs. Hasagawa), will also return, now in different roles. Carrere is set to play Mrs. Kekoa, while Hill plays a new character, Tūtū.

Disney first unveiled their new CGI design for Stitch at their D23 convention last August, before giving fans a taste of Stitch’s chaotic energy with a series of teaser trailers that saw the blue alien disrupt classic Disney scenes.

Lilo & Stitch is set to hit theaters on May 23, 2025. Watch the full trailer above.
