India is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2070, and nuclear power is expected to play a crucial role in transitioning away from coal towards green energy.
In her 2025 Budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Nuclear Energy Mission, with an outlay of ₹20,000 crore for research and development of small modular reactors (SMRs).

In this video, we take a look at The Hindu’s report comparing previous allocations to the Department of Atomic Energy, and how nuclear energy can contribute to cutting down emissions, and the unique set of challenges it comes with.
To facilitate expansion of India’s nuclear power capacity, the government plans to amend key legislations, including the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act. These amendments are designed to encourage private sector participation towards achieving the 100-gigawatt nuclear energy by 2047 goal, as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
