The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has allocated more than $3.4 million in NatureWorks grant funding to support outdoor recreational projects across the state.
Among the 86 approved projects, the City of Wellston in Jackson County will receive $18,316 to construct an RV park on a vacant lot north of the intersection of Jeff Montgomery Way and North Indiana Avenue. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance access to outdoor activities for Ohio residents.
The RV park’s specific dimensions and timeline have not yet been finalized. The site, strategically located near key intersections, is expected to benefit from its accessibility and potential to support economic development in Wellston.
“These projects are crucial in building stronger connections to the outdoors,” said Governor Mike DeWine in a statement. “We are proud and excited to partner with communities all around the state to bring exceptional opportunities for recreation to every Ohioan.”
In addition to Wellston’s RV park, ODNR approved funding for projects across 73 counties. These initiatives include playgrounds, splashpads, pickleball and basketball courts, trails, and other amenities such as restrooms, parking areas, and lighting.
“These grants are all about providing a variety of options so communities can provide the very best amenities for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said, as reported by The Courier on January 16.
“I encourage Ohioans to discover all the different ways they can get outside and be active while exploring the best our state has to offer.” The grant program’s impact extends beyond urban areas, ensuring smaller communities also benefit from enhanced recreational infrastructure.
NatureWorks grants offer up to 75% reimbursement assistance to local government subdivisions, such as townships, villages, cities, counties, and park districts. These funds support the acquisition, development, and rehabilitation of recreational spaces, allowing communities to undertake projects that might otherwise remain financially out of reach.
The program is funded through the Ohio Parks and Natural Resources Bond Issue, first approved by Ohio voters in 1993.
