Your character’s level in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition determines the type of equipment and Skells you can use. If you’re planning to defeat superbosses or do some postgame leveling, then you should work to max out your party’s levels. The max level in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has been changed from Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U.

Regardless if you want to take the time to max out your level, you should keep your character’s level consistent with the story missions. Doing so will make it easier for you to accept most of the Affinity Missions when they become available.

The max level in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is level 99. This is a huge difference from the original Xenoblade Chronicles X (2015), in which the max level was 60. With the level cap being raised to match the Xenoblade Chronicles trilogy, you can surpass the levels of all but one of XCX: DE‘s superbosses.

The strongest superboss in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is level 99.

Leveling during the main story, especially the beginning, can be very slow and tedious. However, there are a few tricks you can use to farm a ton of experience. A well-known strategy is to use the Brainjack and Servant Sacrifice from the Psycorruptor Class on enemies (excluding bosses and Tyrants) that are a much higher level than you.

If you’re in the postgame, there will be plenty of ways for you to farm experience. By then, you’ll have access to better gear/weapons as well as Skells. Use them to your advantage, and you shouldn’t have a problem with leveling.

Understanding Levels and Ranks

Classes vs. Character Level vs. Skell Level

Aside from the player character and your party members, there are also Class Ranks and Skell Levels. These are separate from your level, but they’re just as significant. In fact, you’ll need to rank up each of your Classes to unlock Skills and Arts.

Each of the main character’s Classes have a max ranking of 10. Depending on the Class itself, you’ll unlock either an Art or Skill, sometimes both, when reaching certain ranks. Your Class Rank uses Class Points (CP) instead of XP.

Skell Levels, Explained

Finally, there are Skells, which are the giant mechs piloted by BLADE members in NLA. You’ll have to complete Chapter 6 before you can start the exams to get your Skell License. Whoever is piloting the Skell must also meet the base level requirement of the Skell you select.

Unlike your Class and level, Skells have a set level and do not have their own experience. If you choose to pilot a Level 30 Skell, then it will stay at level 30. However, you will be required to upgrade Sakuraba Industries R&D to unlock stronger Skells.

Except for quest-related Skells, Skell levels are:

In other words, your party’s max level (99) will always be higher than a Skell’s level. However, this shouldn’t negate a Skell’s abilities. There are several models and three different types of Skells that are designed for specific combat.
