The following contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, Episodes 1 and 2, now streaming on Disney+.
It’s been quite the long and winding road to Daredevil: Born Again. After Daredevil‘s initial cancelation, fans were distraught over the idea of never seeing the dark, gritty vigilante or his vibrant cast of supporting characters again. Audiences were then over the moon to see Charlie Cox reprise his role as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Vincent D’Onofrio return as Wilson Fisk in Hawkeye. Born Again was announced shortly after, and now, the new series has officially brought Daredevil and his friends into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As excited as fans are about this development, it has also led to some questions about the new show’s place in the official MCU timeline.
As with most of the MCU’s post-Avengers: Endgame projects, audiences have begun to wonder when exactly Daredevil: Born Again takes place in relation to the franchise’s other movies and TV shows. The answer is often complicated by Endgame‘s five-year time jump, which put the universe a few years into the future compared to each project’s real-life release date. The new series’ one-year time skip in Episode 1, “Heaven’s Half Hour,” makes the answer even more difficult to pin down. That said, clues from the show and Marvel’s own official timeline give audiences a good idea of when Born Again takes place.

The Official MCU Timeline Puts Daredevil: Born Again After Agatha All Along
Daredevil: Born Again’s Time-Skip Complicates Matters

While Born Again itself doesn’t reveal any specific dates, Disney+ has already given fans part of the answer through the show’s placement under its MCU Complete Timeline section. The newest series can be found right behind the franchise’s last show, Agatha All Along. Although that show doesn’t give exact dates either, it does specify that it takes place three years after the events of WandaVision. Fans already know thanks to The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline that WandaVision occurred in Fall 2023, which puts Agatha All Along in Fall 2026. Subsequently, Born Again must take place sometime after. The second episode, “Optics,” opens with Fisk taking office as New York’s mayor on New Year’s Eve. If the first episode takes place in late 2026, then the second episode – and, presumably, the rest of the season – takes place in early 2027. However, there’s another complication.
Year |
MCU Movies & TV shows |
---|---|
2023 |
Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision |
2024 |
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Hawkeye |
2025 |
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Moon Knight, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ms. Marvel, Thor: Love and Thunder, Werewolf by Night, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special |
2026 |
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Secret Invasion, The Marvels, Agatha All Along, Daredevil: Born Again S1E1 |
2027 |
Daredevil: Born Again S1E2-9, Captain America: Brave New World |
Born Again‘s premiere episode opens with Bullseye killing Foggy and picks up with Matt one year later. It’s unclear if Disney+’s timeline takes this into account. If it does, then the prologue might take place in late 2026, which would push the rest of the series’ events back another year. Alternatively, it could still be 2027 since Disney+’s timeline usually places projects depending on when the bulk of the story takes place. For instance, Thor begins with a flashback to the Battle of Tønsberg in 965 AD, which would put it before Captain America: The First Avenger, but since the majority of the story occurs in 2010, it is accordingly placed behind Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. Thus, it wouldn’t be unprecedented for Born Again‘s prologue to take place before the events of Agatha All Along, with the rest of the show happening afterward.

Additionally, The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline confirms that Born Again‘s prologue can’t have happened at just any time. Before the series started, Matt Murdock’s last chronological appearance was in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law‘s Season 1 finale. The book reveals that the events of that show happen throughout 2025, with the final episode taking place in the fall. Since Matt was still living a double life as Daredevil, Born Again‘s prologue must take place after She-Hulk. In other words, Foggy’s death could not have happened any earlier than Fall 2025, which fits the 2026-27 timeframe for the rest of the season.
Daredevil: Born Again Picks Up Long After the Original Series Ended
Everything Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk Have Done in the Interim
The wait between Daredevil and Born Again may have been long for fans, but it’s been even longer for the characters. Although The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline omits the Defenders Saga, and Disney+ doesn’t specify when each season takes place, Marvel’s official website offers more clarity. The site’s timeline reveals that Daredevil‘s third and final season takes place between Doctor Strange and Thor: Ragnarok. The reference book confirms that these took place in the fall of 2016 and the fall of 2017, respectively. With all the other Defenders having an additional season between Doctor Strange and Daredevil, Season 3 likely takes place in 2017, despite being released in 2018. This means that there are at least eight years between the end of Daredevil and the beginning of Born Again, whereas fans had seven years between Daredevil‘s cancellation and Born Again‘s premiere.

In the meantime, fans have gotten to see Daredevil and Wilson Fisk pop up in multiple MCU installments. Fisk kicked things off with his return in Hawkeye. Then, Matt Murdock defended Peter Parker and Happy Hogan when they ran into legal trouble in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The pair both returned in Echo, in which Maya Lopez went head-to-head with Daredevil in a flashback and showed Fisk the error of his ways. This was what inspired the Kingpin to run for mayor in Born Again. Finally, Matt visited California and made a new ally in She-Hulk. As exciting as it was to see these two in the wider MCU, fans are glad to see them back in their own show again.
