The Where I Live series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by spotlighting its many vibrant neighborhoods. Each week a local resident invites us over and lets us in on what makes their neighborhood special. Have we been to your neighborhood yet? Get in touch to share your story. If your story is selected and published, you will receive a $250 stipend.
My neighborhood on San Antonio’s North Side will always have a special place in my heart. I have been here since the day I came to the world, learning many lessons while attending elementary and middle school, making friends and knowing I can count on my community. I know they will always have my back and support me through anything.
When my sister and I were younger, we spent a lot of time playing outside, playing with chalk and riding our bikes and scooters. Where I created the most memories is behind our backyard which is what we call “the backfield.” That’s where my sister and I played soccer games, where we had Easter egg hunts and where my dad hit golf balls in the evenings until I screamed from the back door that dinner was ready.
Throughout my middle school years, I made very good friends that I still keep in touch with now that I go to a high school in a different area. I am very fortunate that my parents are investing in my education by sending me to Incarnate Word High School. They have always taught me to be humble and appreciative of what I have and to do anything I set my mind to. Of course, going to a new school was not the easiest thing to do, and along with it came lots of effort and challenges. But my supportive community has made the transition a lot smoother.
An important part of my community is an organization called Girls Inc. I have been with them since I was 5 years old, and some of my favorite memories have been created through the years with them. My favorite memory with them is going swimming every Friday at St. Mary’s University and meeting new people every summer.
I’ve also created countless memories in my home and neighborhood, such as family gatherings and creating a special bond with my neighbors. We have barbecues almost every weekend and even take trips together. The beach trips have been the best because we rented out a big house together and just hung out during the summer.
My favorite thing about the area I live in is that everything here is very close. I do track and I love how my middle school’s track is about a 2-minute walk from my house, so I am always able to get in that extra practice. A fun thing I enjoy doing in my community is going to Stone Oak Village with my friends from my old school and catching up with them while being able to shop and go to my favorite place, Starbucks.
While I may not live in the heart of San Antonio, I like how I can enjoy the best of both worlds since my high school is less than a 5-minute drive from the downtown area, and my home is still in the same area where all of my memories are and friends from my old school live. I will always cherish my beautiful community.
