Modern Family was a beloved sitcom that ran for 11 seasons and featured three hilarious interconnected families: the Dunphys, the Delgado-Pritchetts, and the Pritchett-Tuckers. The mockumentary-style comedy series featured an ensemble cast that included Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill, Sofía Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet. The child stars in the series earned praise and popularity as well, especially as fans watched the children from each family grow up and face the many different challenges of their age, like school, dating, college, and work. Modern Family also featured many guest stars and recurring characters, some of whom later became popular and memorable characters in the series. And one of these characters was played by comedic actor Adam DeVine.

Adam DeVine joined the cast of Modern Family as Andy and quickly became a fan favorite. Andy later developed a relationship with Haley, the eldest Dunphy child, played by Sarah Hyland. Haley Dunphy was the stereotypical teenager, as she was mostly interested in her social life, parties, and dating instead of school. Haley eventually grows up and faces different struggles as she finds her path in life. Andy and Haley began developing feelings for each other and later dated, but their relationship was sadly cut short after Adam DeVine left the show. Still, Andy and Haley’s relationship was one of the most popular within the show, with many fans of Modern Family still sad that they didn’t end up together. But why did Adam DeVine leave Modern Family?

Andy Left to Pursue Another Job Opportunity

Andy First Worked as a Nanny for Gloria and Jay’s Son

Adam DeVine made his first appearance as Andy Bailey in Modern Family Season 5. Andy gets a job as Joe’s nanny, or manny (male nanny), as he calls himself. Andy takes care of Gloria and Jay’s youngest son and eventually meets Haley, the eldest of the Dunphy children and Jay’s eldest grandchild. Haley and Andy seem to have chemistry from the start. However, Andy is in a long-distance relationship with Beth, and they’ve been dating for ten years. But Haley slowly begins to develop feelings for Andy throughout Season 5 but still struggles to accept them. Season 6 sees Haley’s feelings for Andy grow as they share their first kiss, even though it’s not under the most romantic circumstances. Andy starts to show feelings for Haley as well, but he is still in a relationship with Beth. They remain friendly and even help each other out with job interviews, and Andy gets a job working for Phil, Haley’s father, as Phil’s assistant. Season 6 is where Andy and Haley’s feelings for each other are more obvious than ever, but they are unable to confess them, and Andy eventually proposes to his long-time girlfriend, Beth.

10 Actors You Forgot Appeared in Modern Family

Modern Family had many memorable guest stars through it’s run. But what stars appeared in the show that fans forgot about?

Most Modern Family fans were rooting for Haley and Andy and were extremely invested in their will-they-won’t-they relationship by the time Season 7 arrived. Season 7 is where Andy and Haley finally start dating, even though they start seeing each other in secret as Andy is still engaged to Beth. But once Andy and Beth break off their engagement, Andy and Haley officially date. Sadly, Andy and Haley’s relationship is cut short after Andy gets a job opportunity in Utah, which is very far away from Los Angeles, where Haley lives with her family. Andy and Haley eventually break up as Haley doesn’t want to be the reason why Andy doesn’t take the job. However, they very clearly still love and care for each other, with Haley confessing that Andy was the first man she ever loved as they say goodbye. Andy’s departure is heartbreaking not only for Haley but for fans of Modern Family as well, who were rooting for Andy and Haley to be each other’s end game.

Adam DeVine Briefly Returned in Season 9

DeVine Was Asked to Return to Modern Family Again but Couldn’t Due to Scheduling Conflicts

Adam DeVine’s departure from Modern Family upset many fans who wanted Haley and Andy to stay together until the end. It’s possible the producers wanted Haley to explore other paths and options as there were still a few seasons of the series left. Adam DeVine’s career also took him to new heights as he starred in Pitch Perfect 2 and the underrated comedy series Workaholics at the same time as he played Andy in Modern Family. DeVine made a small appearance as Andy once again in Season 9, after Haley finds herself at the hospital and the nurse calls her emergency contact, which is Andy. But DeVine never returned to Modern Family after that. DeVine himself mentioned that the producers of Modern Family wanted to bring him back towards the end of the series. However, DeVine was sadly unable to return due to scheduling conflicts.

‘It Felt a Little Hurtful’: Modern Family Star Opens Up on Rejected Spinoff

One of the stars of Modern Family recalls feeling disappointment over a desired spinoff getting rejected.

Probably, the other project Adam DeVine was talking about was The Righteous Gemstones, the hilarious HBO comedy series that premiered in 2019, where DeVine stars as Kelvin Gemstone. Adam DeVine’s Andy was easily Haley Dunphy’s best love interest in Modern Family. Haley and Andy had great chemistry and made each other better, something that many Modern Family fans are quick to point out. Haley would’ve been able to grow up and become even more mature and responsible with Andy, while Andy became more relaxed and fun, thanks to Haley. Haley had already made a lot of growth on her own before meeting Andy after she struggled to find her path after high school. However, Haley seemed to move backward after Andy’s breakup, once again making a few questionable choices. And eventually, Haley ended up with Dylan, her high school boyfriend.

Dylan Was Haley’s First Boyfriend in the Series

Haley and Dylan dated on and off for most of the series but never seemed to be any serious. Instead, Haley and Dylan were the comic relief couple, as Dylan was usually portrayed as one of the least intelligent of Haley’s boyfriends. Haley dated a few guys after breaking up with Andy, including a weatherman named Rainer Shine, played by Nathan Fillion, and Alex’s college professor, Arvin Fennerman, played by Chris Geere. While dating Arvin, Haley reconnects with Dylan, who got married and divorced during his time apart from Haley. Haley and Dylan rekindle their relationship even though Haley is still in a relationship with Arvin, but she eventually breaks it off and starts officially dating Dylan once again.

‘I Would Really Love to See…’: Sarah Hyland Would Reprise Modern Family Role on One Condition

Former Modern Family star Sarah Hyland reveals the one condition that would need to be met before she would return as Haley for a reboot.

Haley and Dylan make sense in a lot of ways, and they’ve been together on and off for most of the series and always seemed to find their way back to each other. However, they each had a lot of growth during their time apart. And instead of keeping that growth and development once they got back together, Haley and Dylan both seemed to once again become the silly, not-so-bright teenagers they once were. This is why most Modern Family fans felt disappointed with Haley’s character development throughout the series, as many believed Haley didn’t get the ending she deserved. Haley and Dylan eventually marry and welcome twins Poppy and George.

Adam DeVine and Sarah Hyland Reunited in Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin

The Pitch-Perfect Spin-Off Series Saw DeVine and Hyland as Love Interests Again

While Andy and Haley never got back together in the end, Adam DeVine and Sarah Hyland worked together once more in the Pitch Perfect spin-off series Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, released in 2022. Bumper in Berlin followed Adam DeVine’s Pitch Perfect character Bumper Allen, the arrogant leader of The Treblemakers in the first film. In the spin-off series, Bumper travels to Berlin to pursue his music career dreams after one of his TikToks goes viral and Pieter Krämer, a former member of Das Sound Machine, offers to be his manager. Sofia Vergara Dishes Whether Modern Family Should Get a Reboot

Modern Family is considered one of the most beloved sitcoms, and star Sofia Vergara discusses whether it should get a reboot.

While Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin was renewed for a second season, the series was eventually canceled due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and the 2023 Writers Guild of America strikes. Fans of Modern Family were still treated to a small Andy and Haley reunion thanks to the Pitch Perfect spin-off series, even though it didn’t last long. After Modern Family, Adam DeVine appeared in many TV series and movies. DeVine starred in films like Isn’t It Romantic, Jexi, Magic Camp, and The Out-Laws. DeVine still stars as Kelvin Gemstone in The Righteous Gemstones, which was renewed for a fourth season, and gives voice to Chuck in the adult animated series The Freak Brothers. And while it’s probably unlikely that Andy and Haley would reunite if Modern Family ever returns, fans can’t help but wonder how different Haley’s life would’ve been if she married Andy instead.
