A woman has been arrested in New Orleans following the death of sports reporter Adan Manzano on Wednesday.

The Kenner Police Department, which serves one of New Orleans’ largest suburbs, announced the arrest of Danette Colbert, a woman who allegedly connected with Manzano shortly before his death.

According to a press conference Friday morning and a news release, detectives discovered that one of Manzano’s credit cards was missing from his wallet, and found that Colbert used the card at several stores around the New Orleans area.

Chief Keith Conley said in the press conference that police reviewed security footage from the Comfort Suites hotel in Kenner, where Manzano, 27, was staying as he covered Super Bowl festivities for Telemundo Kansas City and Tico Sports. The footage showed the broadcaster alongside a woman later identified as Colbert on Wednesday morning, Conley said, and showed that the woman later left Manzano’s room alone.

Colbert was charged with property crimes like fraud and theft, according to the KPD news release, though Conley noted that the charges “could be upgraded” upon the completion of the coroner’s report.

Colbert’s arrest record “includes allegations of drugging men, theft of currency, fraudulent use of credit and debit cards, and other financial crimes,” per the news release. It was not immediately clear if she has been convicted of any of those charges.

Conley said that authorities found Manzano’s missing credit card and cell phone at Colbert’s residence in nearby Slidell, La., along with narcotics and a stolen firearm that the chief believed was unrelated to the Manzano case.

Conley said the KPD had no information yet as to whether Manzano had ingested narcotics, and that current evidence suggested Colbert was working alone. He also noted that no contraband was found in Manzano’s hotel room.

“Everybody should be aware of their surroundings, and this brings to light that there are people out there that prey on other people and bring them and and into their confidence and victimize them,” Conley said at the press conference. “We’re gonna let the evidence lead us to the end result and not speculate, but, you know, these are the kind of things that can happen if  you’re out in any city by yourself.”

Manzano regularly covered the Kansas City Chiefs for Spanish-language audiences, which meant that he also followed them to the Super Bowl in 2023 and 2024. Telemundo Kansas City remembered him as “a true professional and a rising star, who exemplified excellence in his work” in a a statement announcing his death.

“We will deeply miss Adan and his passion for sports, and the contributions he made to the local community,” the statement continued. “Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
