Crystal River KOA Journey, a new addition to Florida’s Nature Coast, opened its doors late last summer, providing campers with an opportunity to connect with the region’s natural beauty. This venture, staffed entirely by women, offers visitors a welcoming space to explore the area’s renowned wildlife and landscapes.
Situated on the outskirts of downtown Crystal River, the campground has become a destination, blending outdoor recreation with community-centered hospitality.
The timing of opening brought immediate challenges, including the peak of hurricane season. Despite these hurdles, the campground managed to navigate the difficulties.
Co-owner Jennifer Grissom explained that the site played a critical role in supporting government workers and local residents displaced by the storms, offering their 68 RV sites at reduced rates.
“We were able to offer monthly rates to some of FEMA and some of the locals who had lost some of their homes,” Grissom said, as reported by Spectrum News on January 20.
“It kind of helped everyone out, right? We were able to have business in a time when, maybe, we wouldn’t have otherwise and they were able to have a place to stay at a good rate.”
The campground’s location near Crystal River’s iconic springs has also positioned it as a hub for wildlife enthusiasts, particularly during the colder months.
Known for its year-round 72-degree waters, the region attracts visitors eager to experience its manatee population.
However, campground manager Lenea Myers noted that colder weather has presented mixed results, with some visitors canceling their plans while others are drawn by the promise of manatee sightings.
“A lot of people come to Crystal River to swim with the manatees, and even though the water is 72° year-round, that’s the main thing to come here for,” Myers said. “It’s a little cold to hop in the springs right now, so we’ve had a few cancellations, but it’s not horrible,” Myers added.
Grissom also praised the support from the local community. “The city has been amazing to work with,” she said. “Discover Crystal River has been amazing to work with. We feel like the local community has been extremely supportive and even other campgrounds.”
According to its website, Crystal River KOA Journey offers a variety of amenities designed to enhance the camping experience for guests of all ages. With 50 max amps and 65-foot max length RV sites, the campground accommodates a range of vehicles, ensuring a comfortable stay for every traveler.
Visitors can also enjoy year-round access to a pool, while pet owners will appreciate the dedicated KampK9 area for their furry companions. Complimentary Wi-Fi keeps guests connected, and firewood is readily available for cozy evenings by the campfire.
