Defending champion Judd Trump has suffered a surprise loss in the last 32 at the World Open, losing 5-2 to Joe O’Connor in Yushan, China.

World number one Trump, 35, swept past China’s Long Zehuang 5-1 on Monday but could not replicate that form against fellow Englishman O’Connor.

O’Connor, 29, recorded five half-centuries and hit 113 to complete his victory.

“I enjoyed being out there against the best player in the world,” O’Connor told World Snooker Tour.

“Luckily for me it was my day. There’s no reason why I can’t go on and win it.”

Kyren Wilson’s 5-4 defeat by Zhou Yuelong means eighth seed Shaun Murphy is the highest-ranked player remaining heading into the last 16.

Murphy shut out Thailand’s Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in a 5-0 victory and will face China’s Ding Junhui next after the ninth seed defeated Hossein Vafaei 5-3.
