Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on Switch has an odd content warning for “sex” on the box of the European release. The content warning, which was not present on the original release for the Wii U, has confused Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition players and stirred questions about whether something controversial was added or returned to the game.
Xenoblade Chronicles X generated some controversy when it was originally released in the west for the Wii U due to censorship changes in the game. In comparison to the original Japanese version of the game, certain outfits were censored, and the breast size slider for female characters was removed. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition continued the controversial trend when it was revealed that the Switch version would be based on the western censored release, even in Japan. As a result, fans are even more confused by this new content warning’s presence.

Here’s a rundown on how Overdrive works in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, covering everything from basic activation to powerful combos.
In both the original version of the game for the Wii U and the new Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition for the Switch, the game has been rated T in the US and PEGI 12+ in Europe. However, the European version of the Switch release has a new content warning that wasn’t there on the Wii U version. Previously, the game had warnings for violence and bad language, but now a sex content warning has been added to the list. This sent the community into a frenzy, with one social media post asking if something new had been added to the title, and some fans suggesting that perhaps some of the censorship had ultimately been reversed after all.
Why Did New Xenoblade Chronicles X Get a Sex Content Warning?
According to the PEGI rating description, the game has been marked for sexual content due to some of the “female options” having sexual innuendos, with a quote of “I’m going in for a quickie” in particular pointed out. It’s possible that this is something connected to the new expanded content in the game, though there were some suggestive dialogue options present in the original, as well, which apparently didn’t trigger a content warning on the PEGI rating at the time.
Interestingly enough, while the ESRB rating for the US release of the game does make mention of “suggestive themes,” the content warning on it has actually been cut down from the Wii U’s release. Both versions’ ESRB ratings make mention of lingering camera angles and revealing outfits, but the Definitive Edition ESRB rating removed a reference to sexual dialogue that was present when it rated the original version. While some fans would have likely preferred to experience the original uncensored version of Xenoblade Chronicles X, it seems that Monolith Soft and Nintendo stuck to their plan of basing Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition off the censored western release.
