If the wilderness weren’t driving them mad enough, now the Yellowjackets have found a cave that causes hallucinations! Let the fun begin.
In episode 3 of Yellowjackets‘ third season, the teens decide to hunt down Coach Ben (Steven Krueger), which means entering into a cave that causes some rather intense hallucinations. For Shauna (Sophie Nélisse), her hallucination has everything to do with her inability to save her son as she sees him standing on shore but can’t swim to him, no matter how hard she tries.
“We shot it in a lake and I had a diver underneath that was holding ropes that were tied to my legs, so I was treading water,” Nélisse tells Entertainment Weekly. “So that part of it was shot in the lake, and then whenever I’d go down, they would pull me down really hard.”
As for the stuff in the cave, Nélisse reveals that, “The tunnels were all built in studio, which was crazy. They were actually very small and it did give that sense of claustrophobia and we were all one on top of each other trying to scramble our way through. But it was really fun. We had amazing stunt coordinators who were like, ‘Here are the exits. Here’s a safe word.'”

For Nélisse, the fun didn’t end there. She also got to shoot a classroom hallucination that involved Shauna getting a slap bracelet thrown around her neck and having her throat cut. “Obviously I have prosthetics and I have the blood dripping, so it all feels very real,” she says. “And it’s fun as an actor to be playing off of something tangible.”

As for what comes next in the season, Nélisse teases, “As we go, there’s obviously more characters that have to leave us, and the ones that we care about the most are the ones that have to go.”
