Young Scooter, an Atlanta-based rapper who frequently collaborated with Gucci Mane and Future, has died.

The musician, born Kenneth Bailey, died on his 39th birthday on Friday, his representative confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. He was transported to the Grady Marcus Trauma Center in Atlanta, reported local outlets 11Alive and Atlanta News First, citing the Fulton County Medical Examiner.

A representative for the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office did not immediately respond to EW’s requests for comment.

Lieut. Andrew Smith of the Atlanta Police Department said in a press conference the APD responded to a 911 call and that a 39-year-old man “jumped two fences as he was fleeing” the authorities after they arrived on the scene.

Smith explained that the man “appeared to have suffered an injury to his leg” after jumping and that he was later pronounced deceased at Grady Marcus Trauma Center.

“Just to be very clear, the injury that was sustained was not via the officers on the scene,” Smith said. “It was when the male was fleeing.”

“Damn, my best friend gone,” Bailey’s son, Kenneth Bailey Jr., wrote in an Instagram story on Friday, noting that it was his father’s birthday. “I know exactly what to do fasho, tho you know I got my sisters and brothers. They overly good. Yo son a hustla just like you.”

Quavo, who appeared on Young Thug’s 2016 single “Guwop” with Scooter, paid tribute to the late rapper in an Instagram story featuring their other collaboration, Migos’ 2013 track “Holmes,” writing “My Holmes” with two broken heart emojis captioning the song’s music video.

Born in 1986 in Walterboro, S.C., Scooter released his breakthrough mixtape, Finessin’ & Flexin, in 2011 on Future’s record label Freebandz. He appeared on six tracks on Gucci Mane’s 2012 mixtape Trap God, and received further attention for his own 2013 mixtape Street Lottery, which included the single “Colombia,” which spawned a remix featuring Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, and Birdman. Lil Wayne covered the track that same year.

Scooter released 17 more mixtapes in the 2010s and an additional six in the 2020s, including Fast Lane Juugin, which was released in February. His best-performing song was his feature on Future and Juice WRLD’s 2018 single “Jet Lag,” which peaked at No. 72 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
